RETROSPECTIVA D’UN POBLE II

Pere Cabacés (Santa Coloma de Gramenet, 1928 – Vallgorguina, 2014) lived in Menorca for a total of 17 years, from 1977 to 1991 and from 2003 to 2006. He left his particular mark as a village photographer, especially in Mercadal and in the surrounding towns, reporting on social and cultural events at a time when the BBC’s analogue news photography is entering its final stages. An endearing person who always went out with a camera hanging around his neck, although his greatest passion was studio portraiture. When he left, he handed over his archive of more than 69,000 images captured in Menorca to the Mercadal Municipal Archive and since 2024 it has been part of the Menorca Image and Sound Archive. In this sample in different locations (Centre d’art i cultura Ca n’Ángel, es Mercadal, Poca-soltes bar, Can Bep bar and his old shop on Carrer d’Enmig) we can see his studio work as a portraitist and also the social life of a time that seems distant but that the images tell us that maybe they are not so much.
