The dark side of the housing crisis in Lisbon
Mário Cruz
Photographs showing the hidden side of the housing crisis in Lisbon, Europe’s tourist epicentre. Despite the 50th anniversary of the April Revolution, many Portuguese with minimum wages live in abandoned plots, without electricity, water or sanitation, a situation shared throughout Europe.
Cruz is an independent photographer, editor and curator, who focuses on issues of social injustice and human rights. He is the winner of two World Press Photo Awards (2016 and 2019), a Picture Of The Year (2016), two Magnum Awards (2015 and 2016) and a Luis Valtue’a International Humanitarian Photography Award (2025), among others. He is also founder and director of the cultural space narrative.
