A proposal in collaboration with the Insularia International Festival. Islas en Red, the only Spanish-language event committed to a cinema that opens a window onto the cultural diversity of the world’s islands and to island cinematography. A unique cultural initiative that aims to establish itself as an international forum for the world’s islands.
Afterword (2026, VOSE, 5 min.), by Alessandro Focareta (Dominican Republic). In December 1955, Dominican dictator Trujillo inaugurated the urban complex of La Feria de la Paz y la Confraternidad del Mundo Libre, in Santo Domingo, to celebrate his first 25 years in power and of the country’s “modernization.” This celebration ended a year later, in December 1956, generating expenses equivalent to a third of the country’s annual income. With the 1965 revolution, most of the audiovisual documents related to this world event were destroyed or hidden by the constitutionalists. These images, from private family archives, manipulated and reinterpreted, represent the only color testimonies found of this event.
PDL-LIS (2012, VOSE, 20 min.), by Diego Lima (Azores). A young man from the Azores studying in Lisbon sets out on a journey to the island of São Miguel to explore his relationship with his home island, now that distance and time have drawn him away from it. Throughout this exercise, carried out for a documentary study as part of his university degree, the protagonist repeatedly claims to hate his home island, although it’s hard to believe.
Entropy (2024, VOSE, 10 min.), by Inuk Jørgensen (Greenland). The vast Greenlandic ice sheet was formed over thousands of years, but today climate change threatens the close, sacred connection between the land shaped by ice and the Inuit people who live there. Told from an Indigenous perspective, the film celebrates Greenlandic mythology as much as it mourns the nature we are all losing.
La historia se escribe de noche (2024, VOSE, 20 min.), by Alejandro Alonso (Cuba). A massive blackout has plunged Cuba into darkness. In the streets, residents try to escape the gloom as bonfires seem to announce the end of an era. Sheltering inside our home, my mother tells me of a vision that has haunted her for years.
Biopsia (2016, Spanish original version, 13 min.), by Glorimar Marrero (Puerto Rico). Carmen accompanies a group of women who must travel from the island-municipality of Vieques to San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, to undergo breast biopsies. The long journey is made by sea and by road. Amid many fears and hardships, Carmen once again confronts the reality of the need for adequate medical services for women and the rest of the population of Vieques.
