MDF 2023 BASES

MDF is a documentary film and photography festival that aims to show aspects of society that are not disseminated in cinemas, media or channels of distribution of the usual media.

It will show national or international film and documentary photography reports that are concerned with social, political, environmental protection, journalistic or historical research, or show some form of activism in favour of human rights and respect for the environment, or value human relations and the diversity of cultures in a positive light.

CALL

12 documentary short films will be selected that will be broadcast in Catalan or with subtitles. These will be finalists and will be part of the official film program of the MDF 2023 festival. Four of the finalist documentaries will be selected to be part of the Aula Doc educational project, aimed at schools. Aula Doc proposes a number of activities to work on cross-cutting themes of the documentary audiovisual genre and, specifically, the short film in question.

In addition, it should be noted that there will be a first prize for best documentary short film and up to a maximum of two works will be able to obtain an honorary mention from the jury.

The publication of the finalist works selected for the festival program will be made public on 1 September 2023. While the Ullastre Award verdict for best documentary short film will be made public during the festival’s central days. The jury will be composed of a team of filmmakers and documentaries, as well as the author of the short film winner of the previous edition.

 

 

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Producers, directors and distributors from any country can participate, as long as they hold all the rights of the works they compete with, as well as the images and audios that make them up.
  • Each participant can enroll a maximum of two films that have been made during or after 2021.
  • Duration must be at most 35 minutes.
  • Movies can be filmed in any language.
  • Once the short film is selected, it is essential to submit the subtitle file in Catalan and/or Spanish. (File format must be.srt)
  • They will not be able to have content that does not respect any person, group, group or organisation.

  • They cannot induce proselytism or specific political, religious or hate speech.

 

 

ENROLLMENT PROCEDURE

  • Festhome, filling in the digital platform participation form. If any data is missing, the work’s participation will not be valid.
  • Submission of the work and subtitles in Catalan or Spanish in .srt format. For WeTransfer or any other download service that does not expire. Projection quality in .MP4 format and H264 compression at 8MB/s or higher.

  • The posting message must indicate the work title, author name and the same contact email as the enrolment.

 

Deadline for presentation until 5 June 2023 at 23.59 a.m.

 

 

PAYBACK

  • Official selection of finalist films: 50 € for short copyright.
  • Selection for Educational Project “Aula Doc”: 80 € for short copyright (accumulative to selection as finalist).
  • Best documentary short prize: 700 € in copyright/exposure (not cumulative to selection as finalist). The winner of the award will be part of the jury of the 6th edition of the Menorca Doc Fest and will be invited to the festival of 2024.
  • The prize can be deserted if the jury so loves it.

 

 

CONDITIONS

  • All royalties payable are taxed.
  • The fees will be charged after the festival and only by invoice.
  • The organization will send billing data after the festival ends. All invoices must be submitted by 1 November 2023. Otherwise, it will be understood that the author refuses this payment.

RESIDENCE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC CREATION

F/16 · RESIDENCE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC CREATION is part of the residences program of Casa d’Artistes and Menorca Doc Fest. Both projects are coordinated by Es FAR Cultural.

 

 

CONTEXT 

Es Far Cultural is a non-profit association with the aim of social and cultural dynamization through the values of singularity, identity and heritage. We work to promote contemporary art, society and culture, promoting the exchange of values through the recovery of spaces for reflection and criticism. We do this through the F.A.R axes (Formation, Arts and Research) that are activated by the realization of art and research residence projects or the creation and dissemination of contemporary art and cultural projects (residences, exhibitions, festivals, workshops or through the radio project Ràdio Far).

 

Casa d’Artistes is a creation space located in the village of Es Mercadal (Menorca), in the middle of a rural and natural environment. The center hosts cultural workers from the field of arts, culture and thought in general, who need space and time to develop research projects or artistic creation.

 

Menorca Doc Fest is an independent film and documentary film festival in Menorca. This year, the 5th edition was consolidated as a reference date for the cinema and documentary photography of Menorca and the Balearic Islands.

 

 

BASES OF THE CALL

The F/16 residence aims to provide contextualized photographic research and creation on the island of Menorca during a residency in Casa d’Artistes (Es Mercadal). 

The call is aimed at visual artists and photographers who base their practice on the field of photography and who have an interest in making a project that has some link with Menorca and agrees with some of the values promoted by the Menorca Doc Fest festival (social and political awareness, respect for the environment, journalistic or historical research, environmental activism and for human rights or a positive look towards human relations and cultural diversity).

We are particularly interested in the projects that are chosen to know and relate to the local context. Also those who propose alternative narratives by hybridizing topics of interest or experimenting with different formats.

A person will be selected for a photographic stay in Casa d’Artistes (Menorca) from 11 September to 16 October, 2023.

 

 

WHAT IS ON OFFER?

  • Housing. It includes a fully equipped room and common spaces (cookery, bathroom, living room, library and workspace). All workspaces are shared.
  • Travels from anywhere in Spain are covered up to 150 €. The purchase of tickets will be managed by Es FAR Cultural.
  • Honoraries for the artists: 800 €  (taxable base).

 

 

AGREEMENT

  • The artist or photographer undertakes to present the photographic project (completed or in process) as part of the 5th edition of the Menorca Doc Fest.  The activity will be a photographic projection with oral presentation of the project.

  • The artist or photographer will take advantage of the residence for research or creation related to his research, artistic practice or project presented.

  • The artist or photographer must issue bills for his fees.

  • The artist or photographer ensures his participation during the dates planned for the festival (not deferable).

  • There are three days to accept or refuse residence through the formal acceptance document that will facilitate the organization.

  • Any other expense (allowances, production of work…) will be borne by the artist.

  • The artist or photographer accepts the terms of the call and the rules of residence.

  • The artist or photographer authorizes the use of the visual and sound documentation of the F/16 residence for the purposes of the organizing entity (Es FAR Cultural).

 

 

HOW TO PARTICIPATE?

You must fill in the form and attach a dossier in a single pdf document. The document index will be as follows:

  • Brief motivation letter where the work to be developed is entered (may be newly created work or already started, but not completed). Maximum 300 words
  • Statement of Art (Declaration of Intent).
  • Artistic curriculum (can be in CV format or written biography).
  • Display of recent work. If possible, web links and/or social networks. Maximum 5 pages.

The document may be in Catalan, Spanish or English.

BIOSPHERE AWARD

CREATION OF A DOCUMENTARY SHORT FILM

The BIOSPHERE AWARD for creating documentary short films has been created to empower the creation of short documentaries on environment, nature, sustainability, ecology, science and biodiversity, ancestral trades and nature-related lifestyles in the context of the island of Menorca in compliance with the ODS.

 

PARTICIPATION PHASE

 

Formal and technical requirements for short films

  • Emerging and consolidated creators, audiovisual producers can participate.
  • Under no circumstances can they be newly produced projects or be presented at any other festival.
  • Teams must be at least two people.
  • A maximum of three documentary short film projects will be selected. 
  • Those selected in the competition phase will receive initial financial aid of € 500 (included tax. A production bill must be presented) for the expenses to carry out the production of the short documentary (movements, fungible materials, shooting allowances, fungible equipment, etc).
  • The proposal for duration must be a minimum of 8 minutes and a maximum of 25 minutes.
  • Producers, directors and distributors must be the holders of all rights to the work produced, as well as having all rights to use the images and audios that make up the work.
  • Contents that fail to respect any person, group, collective or entity will not be accepted. They cannot induce proselytism, or a specific political, religious or hate speech.
  • The theme of the short is free, as long as it is alienated for the purpose of the call and its objectives. 
  • Compromise to record the short film with a minimum video quality of FullHD (1080), the direct sound with a recorder and external microphone on the video camera and with a minimum quality of 44100 hz.  Recommended (4K and 48000hz 32bit).

 

Registration procedure

To participate, you must fill the official registration form.  With the following required information: 

  • Creator or team curriculum.
  • Show previous works (dossier and video links).
  • Initial proposal (max 3 pages): synopsis, short staircase or short script. 

 

COMPETITION PHASE

BIOSPHERE AWARD

  • The short films will take part in the festival and will be screened on 21 October in the Sala Albert Camus (Sant Lluís, Menorca), in the Biosfera Award of the Menorca Doc Fest 2023.
  • The winner will be chosen by specialists in environmental matters and audiovisual area and will receive the Biosphere Award that is € 1000 (included taxes).
